What makes the history of the Daintree so fascinating?

The Daintree Rainforest is Australia’s biggest rainforest, and it spreads over 1,200 square kilometres of pristine jungle and beach. It is estimated to be 180 million years old, therefore making it the oldest rainforest in the whole world… unbelievable right? It is home to one of the most complex eco-systems on earth, with almost 1,000 species of trees being found within the rainforest. Before European colonisation of Australia, the Kuku Yalanji people lived peacefully within the Daintree Rainforest for tens of thousands of years, passing on traditions and spiritual and cultural practises that are still used today. Once the region was discovered by the settlers, the rainforest was cleared for the production of natural resources that were found within the rainforest.

Home to the rare and elusive Cassowary

The Daintree is absolutely teeming with wildlife and unique insects, birds, and marine life, making it an unbelievable place to visit for all those wildlife lovers out there! The most interesting creature to live in the Daintree is often said to be the Cassowary. There are only around 4,000 left in the rainforests of Australia, and they are definitely a magnificent sight to be seen. These birds can reach up to 2 metres tall, and weigh as much as an adult, so be sure to keep an eye out for them as they can become aggressive.
